Breathing New Life...

...Into a dead project.

Hello! My name is Andrew, thank you for checking out my blog!

This blog will be used to track the progress of the development of Castle of the Winds.

What is Castle of the Winds?

I'm developing a recreation of a classic game, so let's start off with a bit of history. The first Castle of the Winds game is a two-part tile-based rougelike game loosely based on Norse mythology, originally released for Windows 3.1, with the first part being released in 1989 and the second part in 1990. The first part of the game was distributed on shareware CDs and became an instant hit, with Epic Megagames (now Epic Games) taking mail orders for the second part of the game. Your saved files could be transferred from the first part of the game to the second, and you'd keep your attributes and learned skills.

At the beginning of the game, you have ability points that you can distribute between four characteristics, and you can choose your hero's gender. The storyline is linear and the gameplay and inventory system are cunningly simple. In contrast to the cities, the dungeons are almost monochrome, and the graphics throughout the game are minimalist. It may not look like much, but something about it makes it surprisingly fun.

Moving forward...

My first attempt at remaking Castle of the Winds was in the form of an online multiplayer game which I called Castle of the Winds Online. I was developing the game on the BYOND platform and it was the victim of its own ambition. I wanted to do too much, I wanted to make this huge MMO with all these crazy features that were for the most part outside of my ability to actually produce. Working alone, developing the game I first set out to develop would have taken years and it likely never would have met my expectations. After a failed Kickstarter and about three more months of subsequently making very little progress, I decided to shelve the project indefinitely.

Fast forward to today and here we are again, at the beginning of the development of my Castle of the Winds remake. My new direction for the game is far more simple than before, I just want to recreate the original two parts of the game into one game that matches the original as closely as I'm able. Only after I have a complete game that is fully playable, will I begin to expand on it.

So that's pretty much it for the first post. I'll be posting regular updates from now on.

I'm looking forward to the future of Castle of the Winds. After the original game is more or less complete, I'll branch off and start adding new things. But let's just take it one day at a time.
